by John Hartig

Aquatic Ecosystem Health and Management Society, Burlington, Ont., Canada, 2010

This book is about four urban-industrial rivers in North America that were so polluted they have in the past actually caught fire. Their condition then is described, as is the work taken to restore them to 'health'. This book is an encouraging and instructive account of how man's destructive effect on the environment can be overcome. Former Professor of Environmental Management and Sustainable Development at Wayne State University, John Hartig has authored and co-authored over 100 publications on the Great Lakes ecosystem. John Hartig is an accomplished Great Lakes scientist turned nonfiction author who has written eight books and writes a monthly column called a Great Lakes Moment for Detroit Public Television's Great Lakes Now. Questioning how science fits into public decision-making for the Great Lakes and questioning how he can personally make a difference in helping restore and protect the Great Lakes, his life journey has led him to become an award-winning, nonfiction writer whose goal is to inspire a stewardship ethic in urban areas because that is where 80% of all U.S. and Canadian citizens now live.
