This work is a close look at the history of Detroit's distinguished waterway and also a documentation of the Detroit River's ecosystem problems. An explanation of how it can be further protected and remain one of the world's greatest rivers is also included. John Hartig is an accomplished Great Lakes scientist turned nonfiction author who has written eight books and writes a monthly column called a Great Lakes Moment for Detroit Public Television's Great Lakes Now. Questioning how science fits into public decision-making for the Great Lakes and questioning how he can personally make a difference in helping restore and protect the Great Lakes, his life journey has led him to become an award-winning, nonfiction writer whose goal is to inspire a stewardship ethic in urban areas because that is where 80% of all U.S. and Canadian citizens now live.
